Gary M. Gore, 62, a resident of Pucker Hill Road, Bennington, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Born in Bennington September 1, 1946, he was the son of the late Ransom and Norma (Houran) Gore. Gary received his education in the Bennington schools and was a 1965 graduate of Bennington High School. Gary was a member of the Vermont National Guard from 1966 thru 1974.

Gary married the former Carolyn Johnson in Bennington on August 13, 1966.

Early in his career Gary was employed as a horse groomer at Cedar Hill Farm in Pownal and also at Green Mountain Race Track. He later worked for Ray Joly at J & D Foundations in Bennington and for eighteen years was employed by the Shaftsbury Highway Department until his retirement in 2006. For many years Gary was active in the Gore Family Christmas Tree business.

An avid horseman all of his life, Gary owned and trained both thoroughbreds and harness horses for many years. He took part in Western style Gymkhana competitions and was a long time member of the Tri-State Horse Show Club.

An avid outdoorsman, Gary especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and spending time with family. For the past three summers Gary and Carolyn had been members of the Sportsman’s Campground and Cottages family in Addison where Gary had made a lifetime of friends in a short period of time.

Gary always had a jovial and friendly personality and will be remembered by all as “King of the Storytellers”.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn A. Gore of Bennington; a son, Gary J. Gore and a close family friend, Tracey Patterson of Bennington; two granddaughters, Alexis Jo and Chloe Ann, both of Bennington; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Tom Thompson of Bennington and a brother, Randy Gore of Shaftsbury; a brother-in-law, Edward Brandi of Bennington; a cousin, Ted Royal of Bernardston, Massachusetts; nieces and nephews, John and Todd Brandi, Marleigh, Scott and David Thompson; his mother-in-law, Ellen M. Statia of Oak Harbor, Washington and his extended family in Washington state, Tom and Linda Cross, Darcy and John Patterson, Scott and Kay Statia, Wendy Cramer and Harry and Melissa Statia and their families. Gary is also survived by his adopted American Bulldog, “Juicy Fruit”. Gary was predeceased by his grandparents, Joe and Bernice Gore and John and Mathea Houran and by a sister, Nancy K. Brandi.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Monday, April 6, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Robin Greene officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
